High hopes slightly dashed, actions for preparing the future. Corn crops -- 2002 plant health review

The status of maize production in France during 2002 is reviewed. Plant diseases (including rust [Puccinia] and leaf blight [Setosphaeria turcica]), and pests (corn borer [Ostrinia nubilalis] and Sesamia) did not cause great damage on maize during the season. Snow mould on grain was observed on maize harvested in mid-October. The accidental introduction of the chrysomelid Diabrotica virgifera was monitored. Preemergence weed control was implemented with no reported problems, but postemergence weedcontrol was more delicate on developed weeds.
