A brief survey is given of the scientific activity of the Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Dmitrii Ivanovich Blokhintsev, one of the pioneers of atomic science and technology in the USSR and the organizer and the first director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.
