The Seattle Times reported recently that the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge will open three months late, in July 2007, according to the State of Washington. Delays are blamed mainly on corroded wires discovered in November. Contractors had to replace about a third of the Korean-made wire spools, which had been stored outdoors on the Tacoma side of the waterway. The corrosion was caused by a wrapping paper that reacted chemically with the steel wires when wet, forming a white powder, said Claudia Cornish, spokeswoman for the Washington state Department of Transportation.
