Effects of UV Irradiation by Light Emitting Diodes on Heterotrophic Bacteria in Tap Water

Abstract > Ultraviolet light emitting diodes ( <fc>UV</fc> ‐ <fc>LED</fc> s) are small mercury‐free devices that can be installed at the point of use ( <fc>POU</fc> ) of water for disinfection. Considering that heterotrophic bacteria are of concern in drinking water systems, we applied a flow‐through <fc>UV</fc> ‐ <fc>LED</fc> apparatus to dechlorinated tap water, and determined the heterotrophic plate count ( <fc>HPC</fc> ) in samples after <fc>UV</fc> ‐ <fc>LED</fc> exposure ( <fc>UV</fc> +) compared to samples without <fc>UV</fc> ‐ <fc>LED</fc> application ( <fc>UV</fc> ?). The <fc>UV</fc> + and <fc>UV</fc> ? samples were maintained at 20°C to track <fc>HPC</fc> profiles during storage for 7 days. It was confirmed that <fc>UV</fc> + samples showed negative <fc>HPC</fc> or lower <fc>HPC</fc> than <fc>UV</fc> ? for 5 days of storage after the flow‐through test. <fc>HPC</fc> bacteria formed colonies with different morphological characteristics, and yellow colonies were closest to Novosphingobium sp., with 99% identity, while white and pale pink colonies were closest to Methylobacterium sp., with 99–100% identity, based on 16S <fc>rRNA</fc> gene sequences. White colonies became dominant in <fc>UV</fc> +, indicating that <fc>UV</fc> ‐ <fc>LED</fc> exposure can select <fc>UV</fc> ‐resistant species such as </span> <span class="z_kbtn z_kbtnclass hoverxs"
