Morphotaxonomic Study of Blue Green Algae from Pristine Areas of West Bengal with Special Reference to SEM Studies Different Morphotypes and Four New Reports

In this floristic survey, different morphotaxonomic variants of Cyanobacteria (Cyanophyceae, Cyanoprokaryota) have been reported from terrestrial to fresh water aquatic biotopes, of 14 unexplored areas of 7 districts in West Bengal. A total of 50 taxaare reported from 14 families, viz. Synechococcaceae, Chroococcaceae, Xenococcaceae, Dermocarpellaceae, Merismopediaceae, Microcystaceae, Oscillatoriaceae, Phormidiaceae, Borziaceae, Pseudanabaenaceae, Rivulariaceae, Microchaetaceae, Nostocaceae and Scytonemataceae. Four species, viz. Stanieria cyanosphaera, Dichothrix cavanillesii, Chroococcidiopsis fissurarum and Microchaete capensis are reported for the first time from West Bengal. Detailed taxonomic enumerations together with photomicrographs are presented. Different morphotypes like unicellular, colonial, trichomatous, filamentous-with or without heterocysts were selected for further Scanning Electron Microscopic investigation for detailed morphology.
