Publishing as an Agricultural Economist:Thoughts on Why, Where and How

Publishing provides the basis for scientific communicationand thereby supports further scientific advances.Successfully publishing articles in peerreviewedjournals has become increasingly importantfor building an academic career, also for agriculturaleconomists. The aim of this article is to motivate andencourage young agricultural economists with limitedor no publishing experience to write research articlesand submit them to peer-reviewed journals. In orderto achieve this, some arguments are given ‘why’ peerreviewedpublishing is a worthwhile exercise. Then alook at journal quality and choice in our disciplineaddresses the ‘where’. Finally a significant part isdevoted to ‘how’ to write a paper suggesting a potentiallyuseful sequence of steps and discussing elementsand style of a typical empirical research article.
