Demand for first generation biofuels has suffered in the fuel versus food debate, and were linked to higher food prices and in some cases increased carbon emissions. What's more, they were blamed for deforestation directly or indirectly through indirect land usage (ILUC). Adding salt to the wound, crude oil prices plummeted and European Union (EU) renewable energy targets were bitterly contested. The prospects for advanced biofuels which are based on non-food based crops seem better, but it's still early days.
