Fit for the future

Oil and gas are becoming very diferent investment vehicles for the majors. Upstream oil is increasingly focused on smaller-scale, lower-cost, short-cycle projects - especially US tight oil - that allow greater fexibility and control over capital spending in a volatile pricing environment. But natural gas remains an insurance policy for an uncertain future, creating options for the majors to survive and prosper in a less carbon-intensive world.
