China’s state council is targeting sharp increases in domestic natural gas produc- tion as it seeks to strengthen the country’s supply security. The government target is for output to rise to 200bn m~3 in 2020. Meeting this would require growth of around 10.5pc/yr in 2018-20 from last year’s production of just under 150bn m~3 — a far higher rate than in recent years, when the highest growth registered in 2012-17 was last year’s rate of just over 8pc.
