US Gulf leases attract modest interest

Washington’s latest oil and gas lease sale in the US Gulf of Mexico attracted $178mn in high bids, an increase from the last auction but still well below those in previous years. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management says it received bids for 144 blocks, or roughly 1pc of the 78mn acres made available. The $178mn in high bids was up by 42pc from $125mn in March but is still lacklustre by historical standards.
