The US could reverse its decision to impose steel and aluminium tarifs on the EU and work toward a limited free trade agreement, US president Donald Trump says, and both sides see a bigger role for LNG trade. Trump and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker have reached an agreement to prevent an escalation of the trade dispute, following their 25 July meeting. The EU imposed retaliatory duties on US products after the US introduced new tarifs on steel. The Trump administration has been weighing new charges on imported automobiles in recent weeks. Trump, who has called the EU a foe and disparaged its trade policies, reversed course on 25 July and declared that Washington and Brussels have entered “a new phase in the relationship, a phase of close friendship and trade relations where both will win”.
