ExxonMobil’s oil and natural gas production fell in the frst quarter compared with a year earlier, allowing the other majors to gain ground. Total and Chevron posted record output, while BP’s climbed strongly, reinforc- ing a trend that is challenging ExxonMobil’s production dominance. The company produced just under 3.9mn b/d of oil equivalent (boe/d) in January-March, down by 6pc on the year, following asset divestments and natural feld decline. The frm’s North American operations partly ofset the drop. But its 6.9mn t/yr PNG LNG plant in Papua New Guinea was temporarily idled after an earthquake, and transport bottlenecks hit its Canadian heavy crude business. ExxonMobil still expects its output to be unchanged this year relative to 2017, it says.
