"Oil as the main fuel for transportation and a major energy source in general could have a shorter life span than many assume," the IMF says. "A demand-driven switch away from oil could happen in a not too distant future." Oil companies - and their shareholders - are increasingly considering a future in which oil demand could peak within 10 to 20 years. The transport sector - accounting for over half of current oil demand - will lead the decline as new technologies and concerns about pollution accelerate the move towards zero-emission vehicles.
