Professor Melvin Malcolm Grumbach, MD, one of the world's foremost Pediatric Endocrinologists, passed away October 4, 2016, at the age of 90. Widely beloved and affectionately known as Mel, he was the Edward B. Shaw Professor of Pediatrics, Emeritus, and former Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics (1966-86) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Mel was born Dec. 21, 1925, in New York City to a family that traced its roots to Alsace. The first in his family to attend college, he excelled academically and received his MD from Columbia University in 1948, at age 22. Arguably the most important event in Mel's life happened in 1950 during his pediatric residency. Mel came back from a vacation to his room at Columbia University's Babies' Hospital only to find a medical student sleeping in his bed; that student was Madeline F. Butt (MD, 1951), whom he married in 1951 and with whom he had three sons: Ethan Malcom (b. 1953) (PhD, a psychoanalyst), Kevin Lawrence (b. 1956) (MD, UCSF, 1985) and Anthony Havermeyer (b. 1960) (JD, Harvard, 1993).
