Fearing fishermen impacts: Failing to meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, California is pursuing alternative energy production, and the ocean is fertile territory for it - which has fishermen concerned.Loss of fishing grounds was cited as a worrisome impact when a public-private ocean wind energy partnership held a Sept. 25 stakeholders meeting in the port city of Eureka.The partnership between a local energy authority and three wind energy equipment companies is seeking site control of an area 25 to 30 miles offshore of Eureka. To maximize efficiency, 600-foot-tall turbines mounted on floating platforms are planned.In a presentation, Ken Bates, of the Humboldt Fishermen's Marketing Association, emphasized that his group's members have been acutely affected by ocean trends related to climate change and generally support projects that reduce carbon emissions.
