Air conditioner-based cooling is widely used for outdoor shelters housing control, instrumentation and electrical equipment. Passive cooling techniques provide an interesting alternative, and the market for these has grown substantially during recent years. A further innovation in this area - 'hybrid' cooling - is now extending the advantages of this approach and the variety of applications and climates that can be handled. After price, performance and safety issues have been addressed, the two most significant concerns of operators commissioning control and instrumentation systems for remote sites and processing plants are usually reliability and long-term costs of ownership (LTCO).
