INTRODUCTION: Otitis media (OM), inflammation of the middle ear, is the most common condition for which antibiotics are prescribed for children in the United States, Treatment of acute OM focuses on eradication of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influence, and Moraxella catarrhalis, the bacteria types most frequently associated with these infections. Children may also develop persistent fluid in the middle ear, also known as otitis media with effusion (OME), in the presence of or in the absence of an acute ear infection. Some may continue to suffer from recurrent episodes of acute OM and are often referred to otolaryngologists for consideration of tympanostomy tube (TT) placement. TT placement (TIP) in children with recurrent acute OM or chronic OME is the most common pediatric ambulatory surgery in the United States, with approximately one million surgeries being performed annually.
