Need for Seismic Retrofitting of Buildings in Long Service In Japan, a number of long-span steel-structure plant buildings that were constructed in the high economic growth period in the 1960s and 1970s are still in use. The Building Standard Law of Japan was revised in 1979 and requires many buildings constructed before 1979 to be seismically retrofitted.
