The Indian steel industry is on course to surge ahead of US this year and emerge as the world's second largest steel producer, after China. The steel production volumes are being augmented through greenfield plants as well as expansion of capacities in existing plants through modernization and improved efficiencies. Buoyed by a booming economy and the high demand for steel from the infrastructure sector, the country is poised to produce 103-million tones of finished steel products this year.
