It is well known that there is metallic loss on processing equipment during the sugar extraction process due to abrasion and spalling. The abrasion and spalling then results in energy efficiency loses and production downtime. Subsequently, a demand for more efficient processing and preparation of the cane is sought.There are typically three main components used to extract juice from the sugar cane. First, knives chop the cane. Next, fibrizer hammers crush the chopped cane. Lastly, rollers are used to squeeze the juice from the resulting bagasse. The cost linked towear on all three of these components is significant.In this article, we will compare the process of hardfacing and repair of fibrizer hammers to the process used on hammers in other industries. We will also explore the options of welding consumables, processes, equipment and procedures and how they all play a significant part in the longevity of the hammers.
