Therapeutic use of synbiotics: the use of synbiotics as therar for maintaining health of the digestive tract

Gastrointestinal disorders reduce an individuals quality of life, and in some circumstances, can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Since bacteria belonging to the normal colonic microbiota are implicated in the aetiology of many of theseconditions, there is increasing interest in dietary modulation of the gut microflora through the use of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics with a view to improving its species composition and metabolic activities. This review will focus on current evidence for using synbiotics to maintain gut health.
