Preventing and treating livestock disorders with some medicated feeds is no longer as simple as purchasing and picking up the feed at a retail outlet. On January 1, 2017, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put in place regulations requiring veterinary supervision of the use and purchase of some medicated feeds.Before buying these feeds, you must now get a signed veterinary feed directive (VFD) from your veterinarian, which outlines the intended use of the medicated feed, and present this form to the retailer when purchasing medicated feeds containing VFD antibiotics. On the form, the vet will specify the number of animals to be fed, the amount of drug in the feed, the reason for its use, and the dose to be delivered to animals. A VFD does have an expiration date and cannot exceed six months.
