Discussions on modem Brazilian landscape design nearly always bring up Roberto Burle Marx (1909—1994). In Sao Paulo of the late 1920s, however, two other artists, contemporaries of Burle Marx, developed punctual but fundamental practices: Mina KlabinWarchavchik (1896—1969) and Flavio de Carvalho (1899—1973). Their work, according to Dourado, catalysed the reimagining of Brazilian landscaping on new aesthetic and conceptual bases (figure 1).
