摘要

In 1935, at the age of 25, Roberto Burle Marx—combining the curiosity of a student of nature with the desire to experiment and enhance it artistically— started to lay out public gardens in the city of Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco in the northeast of Brazil. It was thus in the land of his mother, Cecilia Burle, a musician and a plant grower, that the seeds of the- modern garden germinated in Latin America; and it was from there that Brazilian landscape architecture—the first in Latin America to assert its clear identity— spread across the world.
