In the September/October issue of this journal, we haw described the current situation of the European nutraceuticals market and the possibilities for herbal extracts to be used for the design of functional food. The opportunity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to have their own place in this competitive market might be closely related to the enhancement of their products added value. In this sense, two new applications for herbal extracts based on scientific support and deriving from collaborations between SMEs and RTD centres are shown next.
