This paper highlights the importance of considering temperature thresholds in understanding the biology and epidemiology of Phoma diseases in sunflower (particularly in determining the flight period of ascospores) and in identifying the optimum time for fungicide application. Results of experiments conducted from 2007 to 2009 in Switzerland showed that appropriate timing of fungicide application, based on temperature thresholds, was effective in controlling Phoma disease and increasing the yield of sunflower.
