Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean with an area of about 65635 sq km. Based on the elevation, it is divided into three major territories viz; low country, mid country and up country. Conventional monsoonal rains are unevenly distributed over two main seasons, the Maria season and Yala season. Monsoonaf winds from the north east cause rains for the Maha Season which is the major season occurring from October to March, while south west monsoonal winds prevail in the Yala season from April to September. The island is divided into three zones: wet zone, intermediate zone and dry zone based on the precipitation. With comparatively heavy annual rainfall received by the country natural biomass production is also high.
