According to my old college dictionary, the word versatility means: "Quality or state of being versatile; ability along many lines of effort, many sidelines". For those involved in resource development, versatility has become a survival trait. Sincethe 1970s, environmental compliance issues have changed mining, timber harvest, livestock grazing, and oil and gas production on private and public lands. Longstanding practices had to be abandoned or changed to comply with new regulations, with the cost borne by the consumer in the form of increased prices, increased taxes or both. Though largely unnoticed by the general public, this change continues on Alaska's North Slope today. Keeping abreast requires both reliance on prior experience and the ability to change one's approach to suit new challenges. Sometimes an unexpected discovery can result.
