Many anti-GM opponents are missing the key point... which is the advantage of GM organisms for the sustainability of agriculture and reducing the footprint of agriculture on the broader environment. Genetic modification of crops can help us meet the key challenges for sustainable agriculture: conservation of water and energy, and reduction of the use of fertilisers and so-called 'bad actor' pesticides. Reduction of fossil fuel use, tillage and nitrogen fertilisers especially important for reducing greenhouse gases. At the same time we also need to ensure farmers remain financially viable.
