New Swiss cultivars of perennial ryegrass: Arvella, Salamandra and Alligator.

The cultivars Arvella (diploid), Salamandra and Alligator (both tetraploid) enhances the assortment of Swiss perennial ryegrass cultivars available for forage production. Arvella is nearly as early heading as Arion and its resistance to crown rust is markedly improved compared to the standard cultivar. Therefore, Arvella can replace Arion in the grass-white clover mixtures hearing the suffix "AR", specifically created for this type of cultivar. Salamandra has a high yield potential, excellent resistance properties and above all a superior digestibility. Salamandra heads slightly earlier than Lacerta, a well introduced cultivar, and is particularly recommended for an intensive, quality oriented forage production. With Alligator, for the first time, a Swiss cultivar of intermediate to late heading perennial ryegrass is available. Alligator is distinguished by a strong snow mould resistance and grows well at high altitudes..
