When a reader emailed us some questions he had on automation for large items, we turned to experts for advice and examples of solutions which could work for him and other operators handling large items. Kirsty Adams reports. "I am a regular reader of SHD Logistics and am very interested in warehouse automation." The operations director at one of the UK's leading suppliers of LVT flooring emailed SHD late last year enquiring about automation for large items. "The challenge for us is that we store, pick and distribute boxes of flooring (planks and tiles] which could be anything from a 12×12 inch tile box to a 1.5m long flooring planks, weighing up to 25kg per box. ... I am really interested to know if there are businesses similar to ours which are using automation for picking of much larger pieces. 85% of our orders are pick from pallet, typically 7-8 boxes at a time, using electric order pickers or reach trucks."
