Bulgaria catches Commission at GMO crossroads

The Bulgarian Parliament's decision this week to effectively outlaw GMO crops (see page 5) would in normal circumstances appear to set the stage for the latest confrontation between a member state and the European Commission on biotech policy. However, Sofia's decision comes at a time when the EU is at a major crossroads on GMOs. The timing of the vote could end up working in Bulgaria's favour, and the Commission's response will be a key litmus test for the future of biotech cultivation in the EU.
