An Optical Test System for Use in the Construction and Maintenance of Optical Fiber Cable Network-by Kazuhito Saito, Masahiro Hamada, Youichi Hata, Kenichiro Takahashi, Takashi Murakami and Hisao Maki-An optical test system has been developed foruse in the construction and maintenance of optical fiber cable networks. OTDR functions and 1000-fiber selection switching functions are integrated in a sufficiently compact body to permit easy carrying to a work site. Remote operation has also beenachieved by transmission through general public telephone lines. The developed system comprises a control measurement device, which can switch automatically between three test optical wavelengths of 1.31μm, 1.55μm and 1.65μm to handle a wide range ofmeasurement requirements, and a portable optical switch unit incorporating an MT receptor using a high-density fiber array to minimize its size, which features improved MT connectivity. Instead of merely being a conventional OTDR measuring device combined with an optical switch, this device offers various operating advantages by incorporating new and original technologies. The system provides a combination of mobility and adaptability unmatched by conventional large-scale optical maintenance systems suchas the AURORA system.
