EU beef imports hit three-year high amid widening gap in global prices

Beef imports into the European Union have risen to their highest levels for three years as tight supplies continue to drive up prices of domestically produced meat. And with EU export volumes falling, the bloc's beef trade balance is being pushed evenfurther into negative territory. Total imports of fresh, frozen and processed beef into the EU27 reached 84 150 tonnes in the first four months of 2013, a rise of 15% when compared to last year and the highest total for the period since 2010. In April alone, beef imports totalled almost 25 OOOt - the highest monthly total since June 2011.
