Distinct epigeal cryptocotylar germination pattern of Anacolosa frutescens (Olacaceae)

Galo (Anacolosa frutescens), a tree originating from the Philippines with great economic potential, is primarily propagated through seeds. Despite this, nothing has been reported regarding its growth and development, particularly its germination pattern; thus, this study elucidated the germination pattern of galo according to the BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt and CHemische Industrie) scale. Fifty galo seeds were planted and observations of the growth and development were carried out two to three times a week until the first true leaf unfolded. A distinct epigeal cryptocotylar germination pattern was observed. Its non-typical features include immense root enlargement (BBCH 016) and cotyledon utilisation (BBCH 100) prior to unfolding of its first true leaf (BBCH 101); thus, translocation of assimilates from cotyledon to roots is suspected. Moreover, the radicle was observed to characteristically emerge at the stylar end of the seed indicating that seed orientation studies must be undertaken.
