Accelerated ageing test for the evaluation of quinoa seed vigour

Maintenance of seed quality in quinoa has been a major setback for its cropping in tropical environments. Quinoa seeds, achenes sensu stricto, are rather small, suggesting germination and vigour evaluations should be similar to other small seeded species. This work aimed to develop an accelerated ageing test for the evaluation of quinoa seed vigour, using seeds from five different lots. Three solutions were used: distilled water, 100% relative humidity (RH), saturated NaCl with 94% RH and super-saturated NaCl with 76% RH. Seeds were placed over the solutions at 41 and 45 degrees C for 12, 24 and 48 hours. Seed water content was determined before and after ageing. Contrary to most small seeded species, the 100% RH ageing test showed more consistent results, in comparison with the solutions containing NaCl, to evaluate quinoa seed vigour. Therefore, of all the treatments, a traditional accelerated ageing test at 41 degrees C for 48 hours was found to be effective, with high and positive correlation (r = 0.93, P 0.05) with field seedling emergence.
