Brazil's poultry industry is pressing for government help as declining exports and falling prices compound the problems caused by soaring feed costs. But analysts warn the worst is yet to come as the industry is forced to adjust to higher prices for maize - a crucial component in poultry feed. Stressing the economic importance of an industry which claims to employ more than Brazil's pampered motor industry, the Brazilian poultry association (UBABEF) wants to ensure that supplies of maize are available at accessible cost.
