Cold weather continues across Europe but snow eases winterkill concerns

Snow cover is currently being noted across central and eastern Europe, which is helping to protect the wheat and rapeseed crops from winterkill, but very cold conditions continue across the CIS countries causing damage to the wheat and barley crops there. Some spotty winterkill damage has been occurring on about 10-15% of the wheat and 15-20% of the rapeseed crop in northeast France, west central Germany, west central Poland, and central Czech Republic, where snow cover has been a bit thin and temperatures have been very cold. The cold pattern is expected to continue this week, and snow should continue to build across north central and southeastern areas. The continued increase in snow cover will ease winterkill threats.
