Brazilian meat sector rattled as Russia broadens ban to cover key producer states

Russia is to extend restrictions on imports of Brazilian meat products, shutting out imports from three of the South American country's largest meat producing states. Russia's state veterinary service, Rosselkhoznadzor said all imports of animal products from Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso will be suspended from June 15, 2011. The agency listed 85 plants affected by the ban, which include several units owned by the country's largest meatpackers, JBS, Marfrig and Brasil Foods. Rosselkhoznadzor said it would also tighten controls on imports from other parts of Brazil, citing an ealier report which found systemic deficiencies' at Brazilian meat plants (see AE2460,22.04.11, page 22).
