摘要

Despite the dramatic price swings of 2010, trade on the global sugar market was strong last year, with exports of the sweetener recording their biggest expansion on record. Data compiled by GTIS reveals that global exports increased by 12.6% to 45.9 million tonnes - the rise largely the result of heavy sales from the worlds biggest exporter Brazil. This South American country featured the strongest absolute leap in sales, increasing 3.7mt over already strong exports the year earlier. This performancewas undoubtedly helped by the record prices on either side of the trough in early May 2010.But a more surprising development among the top five exporters was the sharp increase in EU sugar sales. A recent reform of the Unions sugar market policies saw an end to export subsidies for quota sugar in marketing year 2008/09.
