The domino effect: food export bans imperil global food security

Many factors are frequently cited as the cause of the food price crisis of 2008, ranging from the production of biofuels from food, higher oil prices, changing diets, droughts and climate change, through to financial speculation. But a factor which isoften overlooked is that of the imposition of food export bans. These bans were imposed by various countries throughout the 2008 crisis, with one ban leading to another, giving rise to a domino effect which in the end came to constitute one of the principal causes of the price hike.
