In a field trial in 1996-97 in Tuscany, Italy, sorghum cv. HS1 and HS3 were grown on 12 soil types differing in clay, silt and sand percentages, and were given 0 or 200 kg N/ha. In the absence of N fertilizer, the dry weight of aboveground parts washighest on the loam soils, intermediate on the sandy loam soil and lowest on the clay loam and silt clay loam soils. N fertilizer increased biomass yield, the greatest effect occurring on the loam and sandy loam soils with a sand content higher than 50%. N uptake and P uptake and recovery were increased by N fertilizer, and were lowest on clay loam and silt clay loam soils.
