China will build 50 million mt/year of HrC capacity in 2018-2019

China commissioned nine new hot strip mills in 2018, with combined production capacity of around 25.35 million mt/year. The momentum will continue in 2019 with a further 12 new hot strip mills with capacity of 25.1 million mt/year due to come online, taking the total over two years to more than 50 million mt/year, according to S&P Global Platts analysis. [See table for more details] However, there is no crude steel capacity expansion involved in tandem with the commissioning of the new rolling mills. Most mills that are bringing new hot strip mills on line are undertaking pig iron and crude steel capacity replacements, either by closing their existing facilities, or by purchasing pig iron and crude steel capacity quotas from other mills.
