overcapacity still a key issue in the global steel industry

Global steelmaking capacity decreased 29.5 million mt or 1.3% year on year in 2017, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s “Recent Developments in Steelmaking Capacity” report. The report was released ahead of the OECD’s September 17-18 Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity in Paris and forms part of a continuing drive to reduce overcapacity, which totaled 561 million mt in 2017. Despite the substantial current excess, overall global capacity is expected to grow by 52 million mt between 2018 and 2020, according to the report. In addition, a further 39 million mt of capacity is currently in the planning phase with the potential to come on stream over this period.
