Results of a two-year research, carried out in Parete district (Caserta) in order to evaluate physical and biological, effects of solarization, are reported. Disinfection treatment, achieved from July 6~(th) August 16~(th) both in the field and under tunnel, was more effective in greenhouse where temperature attained 60-70 deg C nearly every day during early afternoon, whereas 60 deg C level was reached hardly and not so frequently in the field. Consequently, soil microorganisms and weeds were more affected under tunnel, but their density varied with profile depth and seasonal trend. Strong reductions of bacteria, fungi and nematodes were recorded at soil surface and in the first trial year, characterized by higher summer temperature. Weed control was generally low and, with regard to Convolvulus arvensis, Portulaca oleracea, Conyza canadensis, Cynodon dactylon and Veronica persica, quite not effective.
