摘要

Leaves of Calendula officinalis L. belonging to the family Asteraceae, were evaluated for phytochemical, antioxidant and cytotoxic activity. The leaves of Calendula officinalis L. were extracted by maceration with different polarity solvents such as n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, n-butanol and 80% methanol. The qualitative analysis of phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids and terpenoids was carried out. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were evaluated by spectroscopic method. The plant leaves showed significant levels of total phenolic contents in the range of 17.12 to 282.22 Gallic acid equivalent (GAE) mg/100 g of dry extract. 80% methanol showed high value of phenolic contents 282.22 GAE mg/100 g and n-hexane showed lower value of phenolic contents 17.12 GAE mg/100 g of dry extract. Total flavonoid contents were noted in the range of 7.26 to 199.6 Catechin equivalent (CE) mg/100 g of dry extract. High value of flavonoid contents were observed in 80% methanol 199.6 CE mg/100 g while low value was observed in ?-hexane 7.26 CE mg/100 g of dry extract. DPPH radical scavenging was noted in the range of 60.24 to 69.58%. The DPPH percentage scavenging of BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene) was used as a positive control that was found as 86.72%.
