MEPs reject proposal to change meat inspection rules amid safety fears

MEPs last week voted against a planned update to meat inspection rules, notably a provision that would have ended automatic incisions to check lymph nodes. On September 25, the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committeevoted to veto the measure, which it was considering under the regulatory procedure with scrutiny, EU Food Law reports. Two Socialists Britain's Linda McAvan and the German Dagmar Roth-Behrendt and three Green/European Free Alliance MEPs Jill Evans of Wales, Finland's Satu Hassi and Belgium's Bart Staes brought the resolution to stop the Commission adopting the regulation amending meat inspection rules.
