IGC raises estimate for global grains, predicts jump in 2014/15 wheat area

The International Grains Council (IGC) has revised up its forecast for global grain output in the 2013/14 marketing year by five million tonnes month-on-month due to better than expected harvests worldwide, in particular for wheat and maize.Meanwhile, with winter wheat planting nearly complete in the northern hemisphere and under generally favourable weather conditions, the IGC has predicted the total wheat harvested area expanding by 1.4% in 2014/15.In its November report, the IGC pegged combined grains production in 2013/14 at a record high 1.946 billion tonnes, up from 1.940bn t in October and significantly ahead of last year's 1.79bn t.
