Clinical signs following experimental Salmonella typhimuriuminfection in rabbits

Authors describe clinical signs in rabbits infected by a highly virulent isolate of S. typhimurium. Ten mixed breed rabbits were drenched orally with 5 ml suspension of 5x109 CFU S. typhimurium from diarrheic and non-diarrheic dogs. Five controls weredrenched orally 5 ml saline. Mean body temperatures increased 24 h after inoculation with diarrhea with or without blood or mucus, congestion of mucous membrane and dehydration of varying severity. S. typhimurium was a main source of diarrhea complicated by dehydration.
