Effect of topical Tamarix aphylla extract on lesions caused by dermatophytosis (Trichophyton mentagrophytes) on cats and In Vitro cultures.

Effect of topical Tamarix aphylla on lesions caused by dermatophytosis on cats and In Vitro culture is described. For topical application in cats, 20mg/ml T aphylla in distilled water (DW) was used. Topical 20mg/ml ketoconazole and distilled water (DW) were used as controls. The products were applied every 12h and lesions measured weekly, for 5 weeks. Hair and scraped skin scale were examined microscopically for dermatophytosis by wood lamp. In Vitro, 7 day T aphylla was cultured in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA). Ketonazole and DW in SDA were used as controls. A petri dish culture was performed to confirm findings. From the 1st to 5th week, in cats treated with ketoconazole, lesions measured 3.1, 3, 2.2, 0.5 and 0cm, DW controls 3, 3.5, 3:5 6.7, and5:8cm and T.aphylla extract 2.9, 2.9, 2.4, 0.9 and 0cm, respectively. In vitro, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30mg/ml T aphilla produced inhibition zones of 0, 4, 8.4, 14.8 and 22.8mm respectively, but were not significantly different to controls. Results suggest thatT aphilla reduced dermatophytes lesions in cats. These results need to be confirmed in larger number of animals.
